Health Benefits
The delicately flavored and versatile almond is available throughout the year, and makes a healthy and tasty addition to sweet or savory dishes. Although packaged almonds are available year-round, they are the freshest at the height of their season midway through summer.
The almonds we eat are technically the seeds contained in the fruit of the almond tree. A medium-sized tree bearing fragrant pink and white flowers, almond trees are similar to peach, cherry, and apricot trees in that it bears fruit containing stone-like seeds (AKA pits). The seed of the almond fruit is what we refer to as the almond nut.
